should I get a portable GPS unit or choose the factory installed option for my new car? the top of the line portable one I'm looking at is a mere 600 bucks and it offers a ton more features and better looking maps than the factory option, making me think the auto maker should stick to making cars and not GPS units. still, I like how its cleanly integrated into the car, the portable mounts on the windshield and looks a bit tacky. the factory also costs 2,000 dollars. which one is worth it?

Where's the best online store to buy a portable gps? I'm not sure where to buy a portable gps online. I usually don't buy stuff online that much, I've read a lot about online stores that scam people by charging more money onto their credit cards. So I'm not sure whether or not to buy it online since it's not really that safe.

What kind of portable GPS system to get? My husband wants a GPS system for his car for Christmas. I know nothing about these things. I've seen the Tom Tom's, and Garmins, but I'm not sure what to look for. He just wants something basic, nothing too fancy with a gazillion features. But not the cheapest one either. Any suggestions? Thanks!
What Do you prefer, a cell phone with GPS or a separate portable GPS for your car? I would like to get a gps, I drive alot. Both seem to have fee's that come along with them for updating the maps. Wondering what the pro's and con's of each are? LIke, is the phone's smaller screen going to show good pics of where you are? I want it to talk to me too, so I don't have to look all the time. Does one sound better than the other? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
Whats the most accurate portable gps system? I have a pioneer in dash that is very accurate but is in need of an update badly. The bad thing is that it's in my gas guzzler. I now have a gas saver also, and want another gps for that. Some thing that can be updated often, But not necessarily an in dash system. Which brand and/or model would you guys recommend?
What is the best portable gps system for a real estate agent? I am looking at garmin but they have so many models. Which one is light weight and accurate and gives you turn by turn voice directions? How accurate are the directions in the Los Angeles area? Basically, southern California. I want to get one that is less than a pound.
Is there a portable GPS unit out there that also displays a map? Does anyone know of a GPS unit that, on top of giving driving directions, can display a map of the area? It would be great if the maps had street names and if I have a GPS coordinate, allow me to input that then find the location . Essentially, I am looking for a self contained device with the functionality of google maps, with a large screen, and has no need for a cell connection. Any Ideas??
What is a good portable GPS to get at a good price? I want to get one that can be easily moved from one vehicle to another. I am looking for something that has free map updates and Points of Interests. I don't need the MP3 and photo capabilities. Any suggestions?
What is the best portable GPS system for a car? I don't need to play mp3 files with it. Traffic conditions might be helpful. Reliability and ease of use, and one that speaks directions out loud, are important. I can spend up to $800 but don't want something that expensive if something cheaper will do what I need. I want to attach it to windshield, easily removable. I also need something I can readily buy at a store in Denver, since we leave on a 2,000 drive cross country Thursday morning.
Do I have to pay a monthly fee if I buy a portable GPS unit? I've never owned one before, but am thinking of purchasing one. Is there any extra money involved (monthly fee or otherwise) other than just buying the unit itself? How does this work? Main reason I asked -- Consumer Reports mentions something about advertisments in a Garmin unit "unless you pay the monthly fee". Weird, huh?
